The Tennessee Job Hunt

April 25th, 2008 · 11 Comments

I have six work days over the next 2 weeks left with TSA. I feel sad about leaving. I like my job and the people in the Security Operations Coordination Center. My last day of work is May 6. My husband and I have yet to secure a new jobs in Tennessee. I’m getting a bit nervous. Any one personally know the job fairy cause I could use her help finding employment.

My husband starts his 60 days of terminal leave from the Air Force starting on May 22. He will still be receiving his full military paycheck until the end of July. His retirement pay starts in August. Luckily, I have managed to save up about 164 hours of leave time from TSA. This will cover my paycheck for all of May and part of June. I will physically be in Tennessee starting on the 26th May.

I have put my resume and education at the top of the page. Feel free to print it out and pass it around.

I am not looking for any type of employment in particular, except that I refuse to work in fast food. Nothing against the people that work there. I like fast food. I just don’t want to work there. Salary is negotiable. I’m not looking for a lot just not less than I am making now. I’m hoping to find work somewhere around Nashville or Knoxville but my husband and I are both flexible on this.

I would prefer

..to work at a location where everyone enjoys the work they do.

I am confident

..all of my previous employers over the years would say that I am one of the best, hardworking employees they ever had.

I am looking

..for permanent employment. I want to put down roots.

Tennessee is my home.

I’ve been back for a year and have only been offered $10/hr. employment. And, yes, for every offer of that, and my response of “but look at my experience” the response has been “but the cost of living is so much lower here”. Um, clue to employers, not that low, and certainly not now. My background is over 20 years experience in Customer Service/Logistics/Inside Sales and Management of all three. So, I’m certainly not low skilled. I’m just not in possession of skills that will get me any real money here. We are now starting to decide where our next relo will be, since I won’t commit resume suicide.
Of the two places you are considering, I would recommend Nashville as the pay seems to be higher and the quality of available employment is better. For anybody other than basic entry-level employees, Knoxville is a dead market. That is, unless you are in a tech field, then you can write your ticket. Sorry for the bad news but it’s just not good here right now, anywhere, but Knoxville seems to get much worse much faster than anywhere I’ve ever seen.

As one of Marsha’s former supervisors, I can say that she will work circles around most other employees.

Missybw- Thanks for stopping by and thanks for the information I appreciate you honesty.

Nancy- oh my gosh, I am such a dweeb. I didn’t realize it was you. I miss you guys. I hope things are going well. Thanks for the nice comment.

I have to second Missy on that … the Knoxville job market sucks right now. I have been out of work for 7 months now, subsisting on student loans, which are about to run out. I am picking out a nice box and a bridge to put it under until September and the next disbursement (and I am trying not to think about the debt that is piling up). Relo isn’t an option, as my elderly parents need me nearby, and I am also trying to get my two kids, 18 and 20, launched out of the nest here. Life isn’t so grand these days.

The only words of advice I might have is to get CareerBuilder, HotJobs and Monster RSS in your reader and hope something floats by.

Marsha I wish you the best of Luck in the job hunt. does your current employer offer any transfers at all? Perhaps the branch of the TSA in TN can provide some opportunities.

Missybw seems to have the scoop and I’m shocked they would offer her 10 an hour with THAT EXPERIENCE!! Geez.

Hi Marsha, We live in Clarksville which is about 45min NW of Nashville. With you guys retiring from the AF we have the army base right here which is convenient for medical care and commissary privileges. You can still work in Nashville and can probably get home alot quicker living in Clarksville than most that live in the Nashville area b/c of traffic. Getting a job that pays more than $10 an hour is hard to find here in Clarksville but housing is very affordable and plentiful here + the benefits of living near the base for you too as I mentioned already. Good Luck!

Tot’s Mom- Thanks, hopefully I will have a job soon. One can only hope.

Ricardo- I could transfer with TSA but I have no desire to go back and be a TSO. I like being a coordination center officer and a position is not open.

Regge- Thanks for the information about Clarksville. My parents live in Springfield and make a trip to Fort Campbell at least once a month.

I can understand that. I hope a position in the coordination center does open soon for you. I got the impression that you really liked that job. I just can’t imagine 10 bucks being good pay anywhere. Up here in CT that’s what they’re paying kids to work a Blockbuster video. But it’s VERY expensive up here. Stay away.

Ricardo- I do really, really like this job. The good news is that the Coordination Center Officer jobs are going permanent soon. Right now they are just colateral duty. Many of the centers are increasing their staff numbers so maybe…this is a big maybe I could reapply. If I don’t find something I like better before then. :)

I have been job hunting all over Nashville and Knoxville and a few other areas. A bachelor degree isn’t going to get you much more than that. :(
